The Beauty of Sistahood
A sister can be seen as someone who is both ourselves and very much not ourselves a special kind of double” Toni Morrison
What sistahood is not; what sistahood is and how to create and cultivate healthy sistahood.
What sistahood is not!
Sistahood is not a group of women who come together with ulterior motives and hidden agendas. It is not a place where women go who have no real intentions of being authentic. It is not a place where women form “clicks” and/or gossip or talk about one another (being messy). It is not a place where there is drama constantly and no accountability for a woman’s actions. Jealousy, envy, competition and pettiness are (toxic) traits of a sistahood.
What sistahood is!
Sistahood is a safe space where women of like mind and intentions can come together and share in the experiences of what it is to be a woman. It is a safe space where women can be vulnerable, transparent, and authentic, have a voice and feel loved, valued and accepted no matter what their social economic status. Trust, honesty, loyalty, accountability, respect and being no-judgmental are (healthy) traits of a sistahood.
Creating and cultivating a viable Sistahood!
Sistahood can be a beautiful experience when each member of the community set intentions on why they want to be a part of the community and what gifts, talents and knowledge they can bring to add value to the community. Cultivating and sustaining a viable sistahood requires each member to be self-aware (i.e. triggers, strengths and weaknesses) knowing these will play a tremendous part in ensuring there is cohesiveness within the sistahood.
